The NHL hasn't decided whether the Canada-based Heritage Classic will be an annual event, but the Winter Classic will be on the league calendar every year. Canadian television would love that matchup. 4. Philadelphia: A rabid fan base. National appeal. A big market. NBC would love to see the Rangers-Flyers on New Year's from Lincoln Financial Center.

Denver has the right weather, and politically it makes sense for the league to play a Winter Classic out west. People grow up playing hockey on Minnesota's lakes, and the state's inhabitants embrace hockey like no others. The fans will sell out the game in minutes. The negative is that the Wild have been unable to achieve a national identity. There's not much name recognition with the franchise, particularly with casual fans. Of course, that could change with a trade or more success. But as it stands now, picking the right opponent will be important whenever Minnesota lands the game.

7. St. Louis: It's not the first place you think of for a Winter Classic, but the St. Louis area is a growing hockey area and putting the outdoor game there could have added benefits. 8. Green Bay: It could be awhile before the NHL goes to neutral sites, but when it does, Lambeau Field offers romance.
