The Vancouver Canucks Start 2008-2009 Season With a Blast

The NHL Regular season came to a disappointing conclusion last year for the Vancouver Canucks, as they failed to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the second of three consecutive years in a row. Though it was a close race in the competitive Western Conference for a while, it was ultimately the Canucks’ injury-ridden roster, which caused them a playoff slot. Key players Mattius Ohlund, Sami Salo, Kevin Bieksa and Brendan Morrison, all suffered injuries throughout parts of the 2007/2008 season, giving the team little hope for playoff success.

The off-season which followed, was not much better for the defeated Canucks, as several extremely important roster changes began to make headlines. Firstly, after two out of three unsuccessful post-season performances, Dave Nonis was fired as the team’s General Manager in April. Nonis was replaced with Mike Gillis, a former NHL hockey star himself in the 70’s and 80’s.

Just a month and a half later, when things were just beginning to look up again, the team lost their most promising young defenseman, Luc Bourdon, to a tragic motorcycle accident. A few days after Bourdon’s death, the team’s long-time Captain and long-time moral leader, Trevor Linden, officially retired from hockey, leaving many fans in tears. Following Linden’s departure, Markus Naslund, the Canucks’ all-time leading goal scorer, announced his own plans to leave Vancouver, as he pursued a contract with the New York Rangers. Brendan Morrison followed Naslund a few days later, announcing plans to play for the Anaheim Ducks in 2008/2009.

Despite their numerous losses, both on and off the ice, the Vancouver Canucks have made several attempts to bounce back and look forward. Steve Bernier and Pavol Demitra, are among the many new faces who will grace General Motors Place this year, in Canucks uniforms. Meanwhile, Roberto Luongo, who has grown into arguably the league’s best goalie, was named team captain. The event made news across North America, as it marked the first time since 1947, that a goaltender was named captain of their team in the National Hockey League.

The Canucks kick off the new seasons with a fresh, young lineup in place and deep pockets ready for the trade and free agent deadline. In addition, the team has some of the world’s most dedicated and excited fans behind them, cheering them every step of the way.

The team is off to an amazing start in the early stages of this 2008/2009 preseason and regular season thus far. They hope to continue their winning streak throughout the rest of the year and into 2009, as they put their past challenges behind them and try to regroup and refocus on the ones ahead, in the near future.
