The Black and Gold Series Approaches

Well, this is the moment we have all been waiting for.  It is the Stanley Cup Semi-Finals.  Hopefully, you won't be too confused while you watch this match-up since both teams wear black and gold.  Perhaps this will help.  The Pittsburgh Penguins actually wear black and old gold and the Boston Bruins wear black and yellow.  Are you with me so far?

The Pittsburgh Penguins have dominated the Boston Bruins this year by defeated them on all three contests.  The results and goalies are below:

Boston Bruins

MARCH 12: PENGUINS 3 BRUINS 2 (FLEURY)

MARCH 17: PENGUINS 2 BRUINS 1 (VOKOUN)

APRIL 20: PENGUINS 3 BRUINS 2 (VOKOUN)

Unless Tomas Vokoun sustains a threatening injury, it is very likely that, the veteran Vokoun, will get the start in this series.  To get you ready for Saturday's match-up, I have the comparison statistics below:

Goals Per Game: The category goes to the Penguins.  The Penguins score 3.4 goals per game which is #1 in the NHL.  The Bruins score 2.6 goals per game which is #13 in the NHL.

Goals Against Average: This category goes to the Bruins.  The Bruins only give up 2.2 goals per game ranking 3rd in the NHL.  The Penguins give up 2.5 goals per game ranking 12th.

Power Play Percentage: This category goes to the Penguins.  The Penguins are successful on 24.7% of their power plays ranking 2nd in the NHL.  The Bruins are successful on 14.8% of their power plays ranking 26th in the NHL.

Penalty Kill Percentage: This category goes to the Bruins.  The Bruins kill 87.1% of penalties ranking 4th in the NHL while the Penguins kill 79.6% ranking 25th in the NHL.

The statistics appear very even on paper; however, the average goes to the Pittsburgh Penguins.  With all the rental players, this year is their destiny.  They will not blow the Bruins out, but defeat them each game by one goal.  If you have a bookie in Vegas, the sure bet is to choose the Penguins to win and under 5.5 goals.  Enjoy the series!
