The Big Apple of My Eye
The Pittsburgh Penguins are finally back home after having 4 games on the road. The Penguins are coming off a 2-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils. The New York Rangers, however, are coming off a 2-1 (SO) win against the Florida Panthers. The Rangers are still with their 5 games road series. This game with the Penguins is a very important Metropolitan contest. The series between the two teams is tied at one game apiece.
November 6: Rangers 5 Penguins 1
December 18: Penguins 4 Rangers 3 (SO)
Shootout losses count as a tie within the point standings; therefore, the Penguins did not technically defeat the Rangers yet. I liked it better when you either win, loss, or tie. Shootouts have made the sport more exciting but have given a point to a losing team. The Metropolitan Division standings are below:
Pittsburgh Penguins (29-12-1)
Washington Capitals (20-15-6)
Philadelphia Flyers (20-17-4)
New Jersey Devils (17-16-8)
New York Rangers (20-19-2)
Carolina Hurricanes (16-16-9)
Columbus Blue Jackets (18-19-4)
New York Islanders (14-21-7)
In all actuality, the Metropolitan is not a tight race at all as the Penguins lead the Capitals by 13 points. All the other divisions have 2-5 points separating the first and second seeds. On January 15, the Penguins will host the second place Caps. As bad as I hate to admit it, I feel the Rangers will defeat the Penguins tonight. The Penguins have struggled with the Rangers. I predict a close match-up, Rangers 3 Penguins 2. Be sure to watch tonight’s match-up on ROOT Sports at 7:30 PM.
