Life isn't fair and neither is the current way that they NHL seeds its playoff participants. If your team wins it division, it earns either a 1, 2 or 3 seed. This, even if it has earned a dozen or more less points than a 2nd, 3rd or even 4th place team in another division. Obviously, a divisional championship is a worthy achievement. It becomes tarnished a bit if the rest of the teams in their division are the bottom feeders of the league. A comparison could be made with the recently completed NCAA college basketball March Madness tournament. Just because Robert Morris University won the Northeast Conference, they would earn a top 2 seed over the University of North Carolina, who happened to finish 3rd in the competitive Atlantic Coast Conference. This would rankle the feathers of every university Athletic Director in the country. The Penguins Atlantic Division, with the New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers and New Jersey Devils all qualified for the playoffs with 8 to 12 points over the Southeast Division winner Florida Panthers.. The Panthers, instead of earning the #3 seed, should earn the 6th to 8th seed and be satisfied with it. The only way to absolutely resolve this seeding inequity is either quickly do away with the division setup and just list all 15 teams in the conference and the top 8 teams would then make the playoffs. The sad part in that scenario is that some point in time, a divisional winner would earn less points than the 8th seed and bump them out of the playoffs.

Some say that having home ice advantage is not crucial to winning a playoff series. Should the home team fall behind in the score, their own fans sometimes turn against them. This adds to the pressure that the team is already feeling. Truth be told, for all of the playoff success that the Penguins have attained recently, in the past 22 years, they have only clinched one game #7 playoff victory at home. Conversely, they are undefeated when playing a road playoff game #7. They feast on ruining opposing fans joy when placed in that pressure packed predicament. Having said that, there is something in the home cooking that a home based series brings. Less travel, more money in their franchise's coffers from ticket and apparel sales, concessions, hotel, restaurants, etc., all are positive byproducts of ensuring an extra home game should it be necessary to win the series. Now if we could only convince the executives at the NHL headquarters to see things our way.

The NHL schedule maker did the Penguins no favor this season by scheduling two regular season games with the Flyers heading into an eventual 4th seed vs. 5th seed playoff series.

At this point, the only question is if the series will start in Pittsburgh or Philadelphia. Home ice can be viewed as a little overrated because sometimes when the home team is behind in the score, their own fans tend to turn on them. At the end of Sundays nationally televised game, the bickering between the coaching staffs may have been a preclude of upcoming games. In his post game comments, Flyer coach Peter Laviolette called the Pens Joe Vitale "gutless" for laying a perfectly clean check on Flyer forward Daniel Briere. Brayden Schenn then had the gall to attack Vitale after the hit, even after he was called for a cheap shot cross-checking penalty to Sidney Crosby.

Schenn never served his penalty because of a reviewed goal by Steve Sullivan earlier erased it. The Flyers eventually won the game and continued their Consol Energy Center dominance over the Pens by improving to 5-0 in Pittsburgh. That being the case, it may behoove the Pens to start the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the City of Brothers on Drugs. Although, the special teams of the Penguins haven't been as sharp of late, that and the play of the goaltenders will determine the victor.

Pens Coach Dan Bylsma's insistence of putting 5 forwards on the power play brings high risk as well as rewards. He mentioned that he will use defenseman Kris Letang on the power play unit in the playoffs. Should high priced Flyer goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov miss the playoffs with his broken foot, untested backup Sergei Bobrovsky will be Philadelphia's weak link. There is a reason that Bobrovsky has been the backup and the need for Philadelphia to acquire Bryzgalov. The Flyers have been searching for a capable, reliable goalie ever since Bernie Parent retired. It has been a long 37 years since the Flyers raised a SC Championship banner.

The Stanley Cup Playoffs is played on a different level, whereby the seasoned Penguin squad should thrive. Last year, they came within one win of moving to the 2nd round playing without superstar centers, Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. If the Penguins are finally cured from the injury bug that have plagued them all season, their 4th Stanley Cup Championship is attainable, despite the cheap play of their hated rival.

The National Hockey League is the hockey league that attracts the best talent in the world. In 1970 there were just 12 teams in the NHL, but the league had plenty of solid competition. Each one of these teams was looking for a chance to play in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The league was split up into two different divisions. The East Division and West Division featured teams that were split up geographically. The East Division playoffs featured the Chicago Black Hawks, the Boston Bruins, the Detroit Red Wings and the New York Rangers. The West Division playoff contenders were the St. Louis Blues, Minnesota North Stars, Pittsburgh Penguins and Oakland Seals.

The top two teams in the East Division were the Chicago Black Hawks and the Boston Bruins. These teams definitely looked like the top teams in the division in the first round. Chicago took on Detroit and looked extremely impressive. The Red Wings were a solid team in the regular season, but it was clear that they had no chance in this series. The Black Hawks put on a clinic in this series and came out on top game after game. Going into the 4th game the Black Hawks had already taken a 3-0 lead in the series. The Black Hawks showed no mercy and came out on top against the Detroit Red Wings, sweeping the series.

The Boston Bruins were not quite as dominant, but they looked good against the New York Rangers. The Rangers gave the Bruins a scare, taking two games in the series. The Bruins held strong and went into game 6 with a 3-2 series lead. The Bruins did what they needed to and would not allow the Rangers to send this won to 7 games. The series finished at 4-2 in favor of the Bruins.

The St. Louis Blues were the top seeded team in the West Division and took on the Minnesota North Stars. This series was similar to the series between the Bruins and the Rangers as the series was pushed to 6 games. Like the Bruins, the Blue were able to come out on top against the North Stars in the 6th game.

The Pittsburgh Penguins were the 2nd best team in the West and took on the Oakland Seals. The Oakland Seals were simply no match for this team and could not even win a game in the series. The Penguins came out on top with a series sweep in 4 games.

The Black Hawks looked excellent in round one and many people expected them to carry their momentum into the next round. Unfortunately Bruins were read for everything that Chicago had to offer. Boston thoroughly dominated the Black Hawks and swept the series in four games to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals.

The St. Louis Blues and the Penguins had a much more competitive series, but it was clear that the Blues were the better team. They were able to slow down the momentum of the Penguins and took out Pittsburgh in 6 games to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Bruins were just too impressive in the finals and managed to take out the Blues in a 4 game sweep to become Stanley Cup Champions. The Stanley Cup-clinching goal was scored by Bruins' legend Bobby Orr. Orr took a pass from behind the net, scored and then sailed over a Blues defenseman in what is now an iconic image.

YES WE DID!!! CITY OF CHAMPIONS!!! I LOVE THIS TEAM!!! I LOVE THIS CITY!!! This season will be one that as Pens fans we will NEVER forget. Going through what this team did in January and February, and to end up here? It's just incredible. It's almost too good for a script, because it just doesn't happen. But it did this year, with this team. It is so sweet to see Hossa watch as the Pens celebrate, to see him shake the hands of his former teammates. He made a choice, and his choice got him this result, having to watch the Cup be hoisted by the opposite team two years in a row. I don't feel sorry for him at all. However, congrats to the rest of the Wings. It was one hell of a series. The Wings fans that stayed were respectful, like the Pens were last year. I thought there was a chance they would boo when Crosby got the Cup, but they did not. Thank you. Hockey....Game 7. This series has been great but it had to end tonight. I expected a close game with many lead changes and probably some heart pounding action in the 3rd like the other games. I thought I may even have to leave the room if it got to be too much. However...IT WASN 39 T EVEN CLOSE GOOO PENS I enjoyed this one much more than the 6 0 win against the Flyers last year. Amazing game. Oh and did Mario sit at ALL during this series Every time they showed him up in his box throughout this series he was standing and staring VERY intently at the game. It was unreal.Remember the Varlamov save in game 1 How people said it was the save of the series I disagree. The save of the series was in this game. It was Fleury and it was on Ovechkin here in the first on the breakaway. If that goes in this is a different game. Maybe a different result. And Varlamov I didn 39 t think he was the real deal before this series. He proved me and a lot of people wrong. The kid played great thoughout this series but in the end the Pens were too much. The dam broke. He stood on his head for 6 games. He carried the team on his back as long as he could. The Caps fans stayed to the bitter end and cheered their team for the last 2 minutes.
